Kittiwakefjords — a kinetic urban art installation in Tromsø’s harbour — features two artificial fjords aligned with the waterfront park. Resembling a natural rocky cliff, the stepped structure provides a safe nesting habitat for red‑listed kittiwakes pushed out of the city.
Below, moss cultivation supports both local reindeer herders and the Sami tradition of moss tea; sea humidity encourages its growth on specially designed vertical surfaces. Inside one fjord, a hidden grotto serves as a terminal for marine drones — used for automated cargo transport, cleaning, and research.
This fusion of nature and robotics offers a new model for sustainable development in Arctic cities.
