RUDN University Competition for the Best Graduation Qualifying Work
The project envisages creating a flagship Russian center for ocean research in Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky, located on the southern Khalaktyrsky Beach. The center’s mission is to advance oceanography, train young scientists, promote scientific tourism, and tackle key challenges such as ocean conservation, blue economy development, and climate change adaptation.
The location offers several key advantages: it is close to the Pacific «Ring of Fire», which is critical for geological studies, and situated near a tectonic plate junction. The area boasts a pristine environment, is less than a 2‑hour drive from the airport, and features autonomous infrastructure.
In terms of design, the project combines several innovative elements. It features a «city‑line» layout with a central pier serving as the main artery. The architecture is symbolic, incorporating wave‑inspired hyperbolic paraboloid canopies designed for wind resistance, as well as cargo container aesthetics to ensure durability. Additionally, the design includes a protected marina formed by breakwater walls, which have 4 openings to facilitate vessel traffic and water circulation.
